Lancashire's Halls and Towers

A gentle day touring some of Lancashire's ancient buildings in the drizzle.

First, Gawthorpe Hall near Padiham, an Elizabethan house built around a 14th century Pele Tower and set in beautiful grounds.

Next we crossed the county to Turton Tower, which also features a 16th century expansion around a late medieval Pele Tower. Apart from this, however, the two houses have little in common.

Finally on our tour was Hoghton Tower, a fortified manor house also dating from the 16th century and said to be where King James I knighted a loin of beef he had especially enjoyed, making it 'Sir Loin'.
