We've lengthened our Easter weekend and decided that today would be a good day for a peaceful walk, before the tourists arrive. Haverthwaite Heights is on the southern edge of the Lake District, at the southern tip of Windermere, and offers a charming woodland walk with quite a steep ascent.
The area has a wide range of trees, including spruce, birch and hazel and the floor was soft like a thick pile carpet. As we followed the permissive paths to the top we enjoyed watching the houses of Backbarrow get smaller and smaller. And once we reached the top we were rewarded with a fine view down the River Leven and out across Morecambe Bay.
On our way down we heard the distinctive sound of a train whistle. A few moments later the Lakeside and Haverthwaite puffed past - and we had a perfect view!
