For our latest mini-break we spent a night just inside south Wales, near Chepstow. Apart from relaxation, our aim was to enjoy some of the ruins around this border area. We weren't disappointed.
Having set of after breakfast we had a fairly slow drive down the M6 and the M5, arriving at Tintern Abbey about 4.00pm. One of the best preserved abbeys in the country, it dates from 1131 yet much of the structure is intact.
After an excellent meal and a good night's sleep at the St Pierre Country Club Hotel near Chepstow we started our scenic route home. First stop: Chepstow Castle.
A few miles further north we stopped at Goodrich Castle, again on the Welsh side of the River Wye.
Having satsified our ruin lust we decided to avoid the M5, taking the scenic route to the north west through the Forest of Dean to Hereford and Shropshire and then on to Chester, where we joined the motorway network for the final hour of our journey.
