We’re lucky enough to be surrounded by National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Yorkshire Dales NP is 7 miles to the east, the Lake District NP is 7 miles to the west. And the Forest of Bowland AONB is 1 mile to the east while the Arnside and Silverdale AONB is 2 miles to the west.
All of which provide us with loads of great places to go for walks and enjoy flora and fauna.
As well as being a National Park, the recently enlarged Lake District has received further recognition. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, placing it in the elite company of just 26 other sites in the UK and fewer than 1,100 across the whole world. It now has the same recognition as the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu and Taj Mahal.
Does this change anything? Probably not much. I'm sure it helps to support the tourist economy which can’t do any harm.
Let's hope, in our frenzy to leave things, we don't decide to leave the UN as well. Tourism won’t matter very much if we do.
