A few weeks ago we had a wood burning stove installed. It's so lovely to sit and listen to the wood popping and hissing, as well as enjoying the gorgeous smell of wood smoke. There's something so comforting about this smell, heavenly at the moment. During these current strange times, I find myself inexorably drawn to the cosy: cosy literature, candles, fires and cosy food! I've even found a book all about cosy!
As I was reading Laura Weir's Cosy I came across a poem by Lucy Maud Montgomery. L M Montgomery is the author of the Anne of Green Gables books, the ultimate in comfort reading. Her poem By an Autumn Fire:
"No more of springtime hopes, sweet and uncertain,
Here we have largesse of summer in fee
Pile high the logs till the flame be leaping,
At bay the chill of the autumn keeping
While pilgrim-wise, we may go a-reaping
In the fairest meadow of memory."
Maybe this year, we'll enjoy our fire, read books; eat delicious food and venture out into the cold for bracing walks. Hopefully, next year will bring adventures aplenty, but for now, I'm content to be cosy.
