After a year without any Gilbert and Sullivan performances, we were spoiled last week, with two operas - Patience and The Mikado. Both were performed at the Opera House in Buxton, for the 27th G & S Festival.
Being back in the theatre was such a treat. I wasn't sure how it would feel, but it felt very safe and normal. Both the Opera House and the Society had done an excellent job in keeping everyone safe and comfortable. Sitting in the stalls with Bernie, my G & S Opera friend, it was almost impossible to believe that COVID exists and that it has caused such chaos, in all aspects of our lives.
The G & S Opera Company performed five operas over the first week of the Festival. We chose our favourites from the selection.
Both performances were fabulous, full of the usual fun and frivolity that is associated with the genre and with this company, in particular.
What a breath of fresh air in rather grim times. We were so delighted that the performance could go ahead and normal service could be resumed!
