On a recent trip to a country pub in Ravenstonedale, we spotted several red squirrels running up and down the trees next to the pub. For me, this was a first: I had never seen a red squirrel before. There are only an estimated 140,000 in the UK, and most of these are in Scotland.
It takes me back to the Tufty Fluffytail road safety campaign of the 1960s - a time when red squirrels were far more common and most children wearing their Tufty Club badge would recognise him as a red squirrel.
