We spent last weekend in Sussex, taken there to attend our niece’s graduation ceremony in Brighton. We stayed in Rottingdean, a charming village with literary connections, a few miles from Brighton.
Having not been to Sussex for several years, we enjoyed visiting a few of our favourite places. But first we explored Rottingdean.
Prospect House, former home of Edward Burne-Jones, Pre-Raphaelite artist and designer of church windows |
'Love Among the Ruins', an example of Burne-Jones' work
Kipling Gardens, near the former home of Rudyard Kipling |
Looking out over the turquoise English Channel
Rottingdean's duck pond
The ancient church of St Margaret has windows by Burne-Jones and William Morris
Flint walls are common in this part of Sussex
We spent the following day in Brighton.
The sad ruins of the West Pier
Menacing clouds
The Dome, where Abba famously won the Eurovision Song Contest in April 1974
Part of the Royal Pavilion, with its 'Indian' domes
Finally we stopped off at Charleston Farm House, the country retreat of the Bloomsbury group of writers and artists which included Virgina and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and John Maynard Keynes.
With so many lovely places to visit, we'll definitely be making a return trip this summer.
