Having parked at Rydal Hall, we took another post-Christmas walk to blow away the cobwebs. We followed the River Rothay from the Hall to Fox How and back, taking about an hour.
Following the recent heavy rain, the river was very high - at Rydal Hall the waterfalls were ferocious and as we reached the lower level we were greeted with flooded meadows.

The waterfalls at Rydal Hall were impressive

As we reached the lower level we could see where all that water had ended up

Here, the river is usually about 20 feet wide but today the meadows were submerged

The skies cleared enough for us to enjoy the setting Sun lighting up the fells opposite

It's been a good year for spotting funghi - lots of damp and decaying fallen trees
