Whilst in Carlisle on a beautiful day we decided to visit the 11th century castle. We visited on a day when some historic events were being re-enacted, so the main courtyard was full of people in various costumes. Despite this, we were able to explore the castle without being attacked with a musket.
As we drove back down the nearly-empty M6 (FA cup final day) we decided a coffee and cake were required, so we detoured to Larch Cottage Nursery. One of our favourites, this must be the most beautiful plant nursery in the country. It's more like wandering round the mature gardens of an eccentric but well-off uncle, with statues, follies, fountains and goldfish. Buying the plants seems almost incidental!
