I love woodcuts and when I noticed an exhibition of the work of Albrecht Dürer at The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester I knew it would be good.
Dürer‘s subject matter is generally biblical and often related to martyrdom. The resulting very detailed woodcuts are full of symbolism: although they are quite small, no space is wasted.
The exhibition is beautifully curated and shows the breadth of his work, which mostly dates from the early 1500s. The exhibits are displayed across three themed rooms representing the artist’s home, his workshop and his study.
