On Friday we were treated to an excellent performance of M R James' Casting the Runes at the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster. This was a rather unusual performance, with all the usual tension and drama, but with the addition of puppets!
Box Tale Soup’s adaptation of M.R. James’ classic supernatural thriller featured just two performers, unique puppets and a haunting soundtrack of original music. The simple set, consisting mostly of suitcases and a number of doors, was shifted in an almost balletic manner. This was very simple, but beautiful. The lighting, which shifted around the stage also added to the atmosphere and tension. As one reviewer said "you are invited to the edge of your seat, on a journey to the darkest corners of the night".
A thoroughly enjoyable performance which brought M R James to life on the stage.
