A friend posted Adlestrop by Edward Thomas on social media today. It's such a lovely poem, and is so quintessentially English.
On the 24th June 1914, Edward Thomas recorded in his notebook that his train from Paddington to Malvern stopped at Adlestrop in Gloucestershire. This seemingly insignificant event later became one of the most beloved poems in the English language with its evocation of what would soon be remembered as a lost world. Three years later he died at Arras, before publication of Poems.
