On Friday evening we enjoyed a performance of The 39 Steps by Jonathan Goodwin of Don’t Go Into the Cellar. The Heron Theatre in Beetham is a wonderful venue for this type of performance, small and intimate.
First published in 1915, The 39 Steps has been a perennially popular thriller and this adaptation by Jonathan Goodwin was full of drama and mystery.
Jonathan Goodwin played man-on-the-run Richard Hannay, falsely accused of a murder he did not commit. Hannay finds himself pursued across the moors of Scotland by the nefarious Black Stone, a clandestine criminal organisation hell-bent on plunging the world into a global war. In a race against time, Hannay must evade capture and certain death at the hands of the criminals responsible, and prevent the assassination of a foreign dignitary by anarchist spies.
A very exciting performance and another wonderful adaptation by this very clever actor. We always leave the theatre wondering how on earth he remembers all the words!
