The Hound of the Baskervilles

On Friday we enjoyed a hilarious production of The Hound of the Baskervilles at the Theatre by the Lake. Director John Nicholson has concocted a self-effacing, mischievous slapstick overhaul of the wonderful Conan Doyle tale. We were excited to see the play as we had enjoyed the production of The 39 Steps so much, last year, performed by the same company with the same director.

The play was funny, wacky but, thankfully, remained true to the original throughout. Unlike some of the "re-imagined" productions we have seen recently, this was a play that Conan Doyle would have recognised! This production turned the Gothic masterpiece on its head, whilst remaining faithful to the original novel and providing loads of humour and laugh out moments.

With a company of only three actors, each playing multiple parts, the play fairly rattled along, Some of the stand out moments included Holmes dressed as a hotdog, dancing to Kylie; Sir Henry Baskerville falling in love with the petticoat donning Beryl Garcia Stapleton - played by the actor also playing Holmes,  and the imaginative scene in the Baskerville picture gallery.

A great evening's entertainment at this fabulous theatre. And, as it was such a beautiful evening, a last burst of summer; we enjoyed a meal in their restaurant, overlooking Derwentwater, before the performance.
