Apricity

The sun is quite strong today, and it's wonderful to feel some warmth on our faces. This made me think about a word that is so rarely used today: apricity.

The word for the feeling of the sun on your face, especially in winter, is "apricity". It's an old-fashioned word that's not commonly used anymore.

Apricity is the feeling of warmth from the sun on a winter's day. For example, you might describe the sun's warmth as "apricity" on a frosty morning.

The word comes from the Latin word apricus, which means "warmed by the sun".

The word was recorded in 1623 by lexicographer Henry Cockeram in his book The English Dictionarie. However, it never became widely used.
