The Armitt in Ambleside has a wonderful collection, including works by Beatrix Potter who spent a great deal of time in this part of the Lake District. Best known for little books about Peter Rabbit and his friends, she was also an amateur mycologist and loved painting funghi. The current exhibition at The Armitt includes paintings of funghi which she completed during her time on holiday at nearby Wray Castle, Langholm, Holehird and Lakefield.
We also enjoyed the Kurt Schwitters collection at the Armitt: a number of oil paintings and a large number of books about this fascinating artist who settled in the Lake District having fled Nazi Germany.

We also noticed a recent bust of Schwitters in the garden at the Armitt.
