Last week we sneaked an afternoon off work and went up to Prescot to the Shakespeare North Playhouse, to see Love's Labour's Lost (more or less).
I hadn't checked out what we were going to see beforehand, so we got something of a surprise when we realised that the "more of less" referred to a Shakespeare "mash up"!
Love's Labour's Lost is set in the decade of Blur, the Spice Girls and Pete Tong at Manumission. The music was fabulous, as was the dialogue and action. Some reviewers thought that Godber and Lane (the writers) had over simplified the plot, the duration of the action and made little of the temptations overcome on Ibiza. But I thought the play was excellent, and I was pleased that the female roles were developed to make them as important as the male roles.
We had an excellent afternoon's entertainment, although I'm not sure what all the school groups made of this version of Shakespeare. Let's hope they don't start referencing the play in their A Level exams!
