Birthday in the Borders

The lovely weather continues and it was also school holidays, so we wanted to avoid the crowds of people pouring into the Lake District. Instead, for Lindsey's birthday outing we headed for the Scottish Borders. Once we joined the A7 at Carlisle we more or less had to roads to ourselves.

We made our way to Jedburgh Abbey, a huge ruin in the borders town. Much of it is intact giving a good impression of what it must have been like when it dominated the skyline.

As we made our way from Jedburgh to Dryburgh we noticed the huge amount of gorse growing everywhere. It must be enjoying the dry, warm days.

Dryburgh Abbey is one of our favourite ruins and we've stayed in the area several times. Last time we visited the abbey was obscured by scaffolding but today we could see it more clearly.

Our final ruin was Hermitage Castle, a huge fortress only a few miles from the English border.

The almost full Moon was visible, even in daylight.

Finally, as the light faded, we meandered back to the A7 and returned to Carlisle and then home. A great day out!
